How to Teach Your Dog to Settle and Relax

Creating Calm Behavior at Home and in Public

While obedience and activity are important, one of the most valuable skills a dog can learn is how to do nothing. The ability to settle—to relax calmly in different environments—is what separates a high-energy, reactive dog from a balanced, easy-to-live-with companion.

At Destination Dog Training, we teach calmness as a skill, not something dogs are expected to figure out on their own.

Why Settling Is So Important

Many behavioral issues stem from a dog’s inability to relax. Without this skill, dogs may:

  • Pace around the house
  • Bark at small noises
  • Demand constant attention
  • Struggle in public settings
  • Become overstimulated easily

Teaching your dog to settle creates balance. It gives them a clear understanding of when it’s time to engage—and when it’s time to relax.

What Settling Looks Like

A dog that knows how to settle can:

  • Lie calmly while you work, eat, or watch TV
  • Relax at a restaurant or outdoor patio
  • Stay composed when guests arrive
  • Wait patiently without constant stimulation

This behavior doesn’t happen automatically—it’s taught through structure and repetition.

How We Teach Calmness

We introduce structured behaviors like “place” or extended “down” stays to create duration and stability. Dogs are rewarded for remaining calm and guided back into position if they break.

We also gradually introduce distractions while maintaining calm expectations, helping the dog understand that relaxation is the goal—even in stimulating environments.

A Balanced Dog Is a Trainable Dog

Training isn’t just about movement and commands—it’s about balance. Teaching your dog how to turn “off” is just as important as teaching them how to perform. When your dog learns to settle, everything else in training becomes more effective.

A dog that can settle is easier to live with, easier to take places, and less likely to develop stress-based behaviors. They conserve energy, make better decisions, and remain more responsive overall.
